Botejyu Authentic Japanese Cuisine Review

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 ★★★★☆

Location: Lower Ground Floor Water Garden, Festival Mall, Filinvest City, Muntinlupa City, Philippines

Price Range: Expensive. ~400 PHP for mains

What's Good?

  • Takoyaki! It's highly recommended that you try their takoyaki which is really good.

  • Unlimited bonito flakes. They treat bonito flakes like chili powder and soy sauce which are available on the side.

  • They use quality ingredients.

What's Bad?

  • Their specialty, the okonomiyaki, fails to impress.

  • The food is quite expensive.

Botejyu's specialty dish, the okonomiyaki, fails to impress but their takoyaki steals the spotlight and helps them clinch on to a higher overall rating.

Botejyu is a restaurant originating from Japan and serves authentic Japanese cuisine, as mentioned in their brand name tagline. It was established in 1946 so I'm expecting them to already have mastered Japanese cuisine with all those years of experience.

I was able to try their Okonomiyaki (which is their specialty), Yakisoba, and Takoyaki so those are the only food items I'll be judging for now. Botejyu also serves ramen, sushi, teppanyaki, curry rice, and okosoba (yes, okonomiyaki and yakisoba combined) among others.

Osaka Premium Moonlight Yakisoba

Price: 375 PHP

Botejyu Authentic Japanese Cuisine's Osaka Premium Moonlight Yakisoba
Osaka Premium Moonlight Yakisoba (375 PHP)

The highlight of their Yakisoba menu. Unlike the other variants, this has everything in it: beef, pork, shrimp, squid, and fried egg.

The Osaka Premium Moonlight Yakisoba, despite its flashy name, tastes like typical yakisoba. The noodles are thick and firm, which is perfect for yakisoba. The toppings are generous so you'll always have some meat and veggies in each bite. It has a strong taste very similar to how an okonomiyaki would taste like so they probably use the same sauce as their okonomiyaki dishes. Nothing special here.

Original Takoyaki

Original Takoyaki (115 PHP)

Highly recommended! This is a winner right here! Botejyu's Original Takoyaki tastes authentic and not like the usual simple and low-cost takoyakis out there. It's very flavorful and has a thick yet soft batter base that most takoyakis lack. They use octopus here, not crab sticks or squid, so you really get that authentic takoyaki flavor. I gave the serving size a 5-star since each takoyaki ball is quite large so you can get in two bites at least.

Priced at 115 PHP, so that's 38.3 PHP per piece, makes it expensive but the size is big and the taste and quality is superb so it's worth it!

Premium Moonlight Okonomiyaki

Overall Rating: ★★★★☆

Taste: ★★★★☆

Serving Size: ★★★★★

Value For Money: ★★★★☆

Price: 395 PHP

Premium Moonlight Okonomiyaki (395 PHP)

The highlight of their Okonomiyaki menu. Much like the Premium Moonlight Yakisoba, this has everything in it: beef, pork, shrimp, squid, and fried egg. Heck, they even taste the same.

I was a bit disappointed since I was expecting this to be their best dish. There wasn't anything very special about it. The taste is quite strong so it's better if you share it with someone and not eat the whole serving alone. I'm not saying it tastes bad, but I was expecting something more to wow my taste buds considering this is their specialty and they have over 70 years of experience. The failed expectations prevented this dish from getting a full 5-star rating.

Overall, Botejyu Authentic Japanese Cuisine does live up to its name by serving quality and authentic Japanese food. Don't expect too much from the okonomiyaki, but the takoyaki is definitely a must try if you every visit this restaurant.
